Let's Make Sense Of All The Deck Surfaces

Explaining The Different Types Of Deck Coverings

Picture
We hear about all of the different types of surfacing available to us but it becomes confusing when deciding on which one.  But it's very similar to deciding on furniture or clothing.  It comes down to what you want versus the cost, PT at $10 psf installed, to up to $40 psf.

1. Pressure-Treated (PT) Wood
The most widely used decking material for valid reasons, approximately 75% of new decks will feature PT wood. There are not many variations in appearance and quality so selection and availability are of little worry.
  • Pros: PT will not stress the pocketbook nearly as much as the many other options available, it is durable against rot/insects, and the natural wood look is desirable.
  • Cons: Unfortunately, PT requires moderately high maintenance with yearly cleaning, bi-yearly staining/sealing and even some sanding periodically, cracking, warping, splinters, and eventual deterioration after 25 to 30 years if looked after.

2. Cedar and Redwood
These woods are valued higher than pressure treated and may be viewed as premium decking. Cedar is not treated and may be more desirable for that reason but its natural resistance to wood deterioration will happen, especially without protective care.

  • Pros: Natural beauty, rich color, and natural resistance to rot and insects.
  • Cons: High maintenance in that it needs regular staining and sealing to maintain lifespan and colour, softer and more susceptible to scratches than hardwoods.

3. Composite Decking
Understand that there are numerous manufacturers and qualities of Composite Decking. Composite is a top choice for low-maintenance and eco-friendly modern decks. Composite is a blend of recycled products originating from wood and held together by plastic or polymers.  The extrusion process creates grain designs and cap protection.  Cost variations are based on quality and guarantee, the wood grain and visual appearance of a particular product.
  • Pros: Highly durable, resistant to fading, moisture, rot, and insects, and requires minimal maintenance.
  • Cons: Higher upfront cost than pressure treated and cedar, can feel hotter than wood, and may have a less natural appearance.

4. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Decking
The next level of manufactured deck surface products is PVC, A rapidly growing, high-end, completely synthetic (no wood) option.  PVC is often selected for patios with pool decks because it is more resistant to being slippery when wet.  There are more natural looks available in PVC lines.
  • Pros: Extremely durable, (50-year guarantees are typical), completely impervious to moisture, rot or mold, and requires the least maintenance, usually just a spring rinse will do it.
  • Cons: Most expensive upfront cost, it can look "plastic-y" (quality issue) in some styles and can warp if not installed properly. Make sure installer is completely familiar with PVC products.
5. Exotic Hardwoods (Ipe, Tigerwood, Mahogany, Jatoba)
Hardwoods are considered the Rolls Royce for natural wood decks, often used for up-scale long-lasting projects with a demand for warmth and a feeling of luxury. Until you see IPE it is hard to describe, with their density and naturally reflective surfaces. Hardwoods require drilling for fastening, this is quality.
  • Pros: Extremely dense and durable (lifespan of more than 40 years), natural beauty, and highly resistant to insects and fire. Hardwoods have a beautiful sheen when looked after.
  • Cons: Very expensive, (high end PVC level) difficult to work with, and can turn gray without regular oiling.
